Secret Pal 3--Button Contest! [Oct. 13th, 2006|02:28 pm]
Secret Pals on LJ 2

Hello dear members of secretpal_lj2! I am one of the new mods for secretpal_lj3. The other mods and I are hard at work planning the next installment of Secret Pal on Livejournal. We hope that all of you will join us for the swap, which will officially start on November 1. Look for more information appearing on the community soon. Information about the start of the swap will be posted here and on secretpal_lj3 in the coming days and weeks. We've decided to have a button contest as a fun activity before the swap actually starts. So make a button advertising secretpal_lj3 and get excited!

Rules are as follows and may be changed at the discretion of the mods.
- Submission deadline is Monday, October 23, 2006 at 9 a.m..
- You may submit as many buttons as you want.
- Buttons must be no larger than 227x102 pixels.
- Make sure that the photos you use do not violate copyright. This means that you need to either use your own photos or photos from a stock photo site such as Getty Images.
- No hotlinking. Have to put that out there just in case.
- Winner(s) will be announced by Tuesday morning, October 24th in this community.
- If you win, you will be featured in the community's userinfo as the "official" promo button! Depending on how many entries we get, the mods may decide to put a few more in the userinfo so people can see them and have different buttons to chose from as they promote the community.
- E-mail your button(s) to me, Amanda, at ladyeowynofnj (at) gmail (dot) com by the deadline.

Here is the button that I made, if you need ideas. If you're not into making graphics, feel free to use it to promote secretpal_lj3 anywhere you want! (Make sure to upload to your own server! This goes along with the "no hotlinking" rule.) Make sure that promoting is allowed in the community that you plan to post to. The mods are planning to promote in several knitting communities, so make sure that you don't promote if we've already posted...nobody wants a community flooded with repetitive posts.

We're getting so excited for the start of the swap! Keep watching this community and secretpal_lj3 for more information to go up soon. In the meantime, why not make a button or two?

For those who missed Heather's announcement earlier this weekend, she won't be able to head up the swap the thrid time. I love this and want to see it continue. So I hope there are others as excited about this as me because...

I've volunteered to run it, and I need a couple of mods to step in and help out. I would prefer someone who was involved in a prior secret pal exchange just because you'll be a little more familiar with the organization of it. However, if you'd just be enthusiastic to do it, I'm cool with that too! It's mainly work at the beginning, but there may be some emails that need to be dealt with from time to time during the entire period of the exchange. If you'd be interested, puh-lease drop me a line at crazykimmy(at)livejournal(dot)com ASAP.

For everyone else, I hope to start secretpal_lj3 November 1st. Please start watching this space for the rules to go up and membership post to go into place in the next couple of weeks.

Mod: Farewell [Sep. 29th, 2006|11:48 pm]

Well, as you lovely fiber-minded people may have figured out by now, I'm not going to be doing a Secret Pal on LJ 3 any time soon, or possibly ever. A combination of a full class load my senior year of college, working, being quite involved in two school programs/clubs and keeping the house relatively cleaner than a tornado's path looks is just not going to allow me to wrangle so many people and deadlines and emails for three months. I'm really sorry about this, but it's just not possible at this time. I also think an October-December run would be difficult because of the (western hemisphere Judeo-Christian) holidays and all they entail falling smack in the middle of it.

If any of you would like to run SPLJ3, by all means, go right ahead! I would love to participate again, but as I said, I just can't run the thing. If you want to take over secretpal_lj3, the comm I already made, just let me know and I'll hand it over to you. (First come, first serve, if it even gets to that point.) Do it however you'd like and I'll probably join, and then we'd all get to participate again.

Again, my apologies for backing out, and for waiting until the last minute (I know I kept saying we'd run from October first). I had so much awsome fun in the first two, and maybe I'll start it up again this summer or something. I'll miss this all, and I'll miss getting to see everyone's loot and talking about yarn and stuff! Thanks for being nifty.

knitting charity [Sep. 16th, 2006|09:40 pm]

So, I work at Michael's Arts & Crafts, and one of the big things we do is collect squares for Warm Up America. For the link-wary, Warm Up America is a knitting charity where people take spare yarn (just acrylic worsted weight) and knit or crochet it into 7"x9" block. The blocks are then stitched together into blankets which are donated to homeless shelters across the country.

It's a really terrific charity and it's one of the few fantastic things about working where I work and I tend to promote the heck out of it.

My question is, though there are charity knitting communities on LJ, such as charity_knitter and craft_4_cause, would anybody be interested in joining on specifically for Warm Up America?

Although I know that this community includes people from all across the world, I'm just trying to get a feel for if I would be wasting my time creating a community for this project or if I should just join one of the other communities instead.

Thanks for any thoughts you might have!

I have received my final package BUT I DON'T KNOW YOUR JOURNAL NAME!!!
My pal sent a stupendous box with Cafe du Monde Beignet mix... I've had this before but didn't really know how to cook well then and totally burned them , so this Saturday, we shall have beignets and think of you! (whomever you are!) I also got two big balls of Patons Classic Wool in white and a bunch of packets of brightly colored KoolAid!! I will so be having fun this weekend! I also got a cute pack of super sticky post its and a fabulous kitty tape measure (in honor of my kitty)as well as one of the things you put on your fridge to write lists on. How on earth could she have known I had that on my list to buy this weekend!? There are the awesome knit related note cards that will totally be too cute to actually use, how could I part with them!? And finally there is a truly lovely recipe book that I can keep everything together in. Danielle (hello.... user name!?) everytime I use it I will think of you. Can't wait to add you to my friends list WHEN YOU TELL ME YOUR LJNAME!!!:)

Still don't know who you are!Collapse )

Thank you, Miss Knit! [Sep. 13th, 2006|04:01 pm]

Silly me, thinking the post-office would actually notify me when I have a package waiting in the rental office... I finally went in, having been told in late August that my 3rd package was on the way, and voila! package number three, from a fabulous secret pal, Miss Knit - aka heatherlayne_n

it contained a "secret" ball of hand-dyed knitpicks yarn - its "secret" because I won't know what color is next until I begin knitting with it! :) The box also contained hand-made stitch markers, stickers, chocolates and some skittles gum which is already all gone (I liked it that much!)

Unfortunatley, the batteries for my camera are still in the charger, but once I've knitted up the yarn I'll post a picture! Thank you, Heather, for being a wonderful secret pal!
